The Dutch design house Demakersvan produce something called the Lace Fence.
The blurb on their website states “LACE FENCE is a high-end metal fabric that gives new insights in how we can create unique environments.”
They have taken a purely functional, practical item that would not usually have any embellishment on it, and given it elements that are decorative. Further than this, they have applied characteristics of a typically soft, delicate item to a hard, sturdy product.
Personally, I really like the result. I like that a functional item has become decorative again, and that traditional techniques are being applied to unusual materials.
William Morris said “have nothing in your house that you do not know to be useful, or believe to be beautiful”. It appears that Demakersvan are achieving both.
