World Wide Knit in Public Day began in 2005 and is held on the second Saturday in June each year. The day aims to bring together knitters to share their skill and passion of what is usually thought of as a solitary pursuit.
The day has now progressed and also encourages non-knitters to try it out, with many events arranged to show the community nature of knitting (as is evidenced by the many knitting groups and Stitch ‘n Bitch sessions that are now held regularly) as well as teaching people how to knit their first stitch. This event held at St Pancras train station in London was free and allowed non-knitters to have a go and take away their first completed project.
While I didn’t arrange or attend any events this year, I did take my knitting out into the sun to work on. I feel this met some of the requirements of the day… I was in public, I was knitting, it was the second Saturday in June!
